2020 statistics by Apptopia reveal Among Us to have become the most downloaded game of the year, amassing 264 million new users globally,  41 million of which are based in the USA.

Released in June 2018, the game enjoyed a surge of popularity in 2020. This is presumably due to the COVID-2019 pandemic, which caused a series of lockdowns, during which Among Us became especially popular with kids hungry to socialize. It is a party-style social deduction game admittedly inspired by Mafia. You cooperate with other crew members on a funky-looking spaceship to complete tasks while trying to figure out who might be the two impostors before they kill you. Paired with whimsical cartoonish graphics and a voice chat capability, the engaging gameplay has made it a big hit on Twitch.

The game was able to beat PUBG Mobile, which lost a considerable part of its potential audience due to being banned in India. It was able to reach only 175 million installs, thus landing fourth in global 2020 ratings. The second most-downloaded game was Subway Surfers with 227 million new users. The Garena Free Fire battle royale hit 217 million downloads, making it No. 3.
